In the United Kingdom, about 3.2 × 10 tablets of APAP are consumed every year, which is equivalent to an average of 55 tablets/person (Jones, 1998). As an over-the-counter drug, it can be readily obtained without prescription. Although APAP is generally harmless at therapeutic doses, overdose causes hepatotoxicity (Davidson and Eastham, 1966; Mitchell, 1988). In addition, susceptibility to APAP-induced hepatotoxicity is modified by various factors such as alcohol abuse, fasting and concomitant drug use. In Japan, APAP has usually been consumed as combination tablets or granules and rarely used alone except as a suppository. However, since recent reports that the use of salicylic acid in combination cold remedies is associated with Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity: Still an Important Issue

Galactosylated Albumin nanoparticles bearing Cimetidine for effective management of Acetaminophen induced hepatotoxicity

In the present study, an attempt was made to develop galactosylated albumin nanoparticles of Cimetidine for treatment of Acetaminophen induced hepatotoxicity. By developing the galactosylated nanoparticulated delivery of Cimetidine the required action of drug at the target site i.e at liver can be provided. The advantage of targeting helps to reduce the systemic side effects which may ...

Investigating the effects of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seed powder on oxidant and antioxidant factors in hepatotoxicity induced by acetaminophen in male rats

Introduction: Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic drug. Although it is considered safe at therapeutic doses, at higher doses, might produces a centrilobular hepatic necrosis that can be fatal. In the present study, the effect of fennel seed on hepatotoxicity induced by acetaminophen was investigated. Correspondenc...

Study of the Protective Effect of Teucrium polium L. Extract on Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Mice

In the present study, protective effect of Teucrium polium L. (Labiatae) extract on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity was investigated in mice. Animals were divided into six groups, each group consist of 8 mice. Group one as the negative control group received normal saline, while group two received only crude extract of T. polium L. (500 mg/Kg) for five days and group three as the positive ...

Hepatoprotective activity of phloretin and hydroxychalcones against Acetaminophen Induced hepatotoxicity in mice

Polyphenolics form a major part of the dietary antioxidant capacity of fruits and vegetables have been identified as chemopreventive or anticancer agents. Hydroxychalcones are polyphenols abundantly distributed throughout the plant kingdom and are compounds with two aromatic rings (benzene or phenol) and an unsaturated side chain. In the present study, effect of phloretin (apple major fl...
